The Chartered Market Technician® (CMT) designation is a globally recognized credential for professionals specializing in technical analysis of financial markets. Administered by the CMT Association, it signifies a high level of proficiency in analyzing market trends, chart patterns, and trading strategies.

Overview of the CMT Program

The CMT Program is structured into three levels, each building upon the previous to deepen candidates’ understanding of technical analysis

* **Level I**: Covers basic tools and concepts, including charting techniques, trend analysis, and introductory technical indicators.

* **Level II**: Delves into advanced topics such as quantitative methods, risk management, and behavioral finance.

* **Level III**: Focuses on the application of technical analysis in portfolio management and trading strategies, along with an emphasis on ethics.

Each exam is offered twice a year, in June and December, and candidates have the flexibility to complete all three levels within a five-year period. 

Requirements to Earn the CMT Designation

To achieve the CMT designation, candidates must:

1. Pass All Three Exam Levels: Successfully complete Levels I, II, and III.

2. Accumulate Relevant Work Experience: Have at least three years of professional experience in fields related to technical analysis or investment decision-making.

3.Join the CMT Association: Become a Professional Member by submitting an application, which includes professional references to verify work experience and character.

4. Adhere to the Code of Ethics: Agree to uphold the CMT Association’s ethical standards. 

Costs and Time Commitment

* Exam Fees: Each exam costs between \$625 and \$1,225, depending on registration timing.

* Study Materials: Additional costs for textbooks and resources may apply.

* Study Time: Recommended study hours are approximately 100 for Level I, 140 for Level II, and 160 for Level III. 

* Program Duration: While the program can be completed in as little as 18 months, many candidates take up to three years to finish all requirements.
